There is no official figure for what a matric dance costs in South Africa. No survey, no line on a school fee statement, nothing you can look up. So we gathered real listed prices from named South African suppliers and laid them out side by side.
How we worked this out
Method Every figure is a real, dated price published by a named South African supplier. All of them are listed at the bottom, so you can check any of them yourself.

We publish a low and a high, and no "typical". For most line items we found between one and three suppliers publishing prices. That is enough to show you the spread honestly. It is not enough to average into a national going rate, so we have not pretended otherwise. Where you see a wide range, the range is the finding.
Costs vary enormously by province and by city. A dress hire in a small Free State town and the same service in Sandton are not the same number, and South Africans clearly know it, because they search for matric dance prices city by city. Read a national range as a range, not as a forecast for your town.
We only listed what we could source. If something you expected to see is missing, it is because we could not find a named supplier publishing a price for it. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with a guess, so a gap is what you get.

What this table costs, and what it does not. What we have costed is the night's services. It is not the whole production. Pre-drinks, an after-party, accommodation, decor, catering, entertainment and the accessory long tail — jewellery, a handbag, lashes, a crown — are all absent, because no South African supplier publishes a price for them. Published family budgets that include those items run several thousand rand higher than anything below, and the gap is far wider than a missing after-party would explain.
What it adds up to
These two figures are not survey results and not a typical bill. They are what you get by adding up the cheapest real published prices we could find, and then the most expensive. We show the working so you can check it.

The high figure mixes suppliers in different cities and price tiers, so it is the most expensive combination of real prices we found rather than any one family's actual night. Both totals cover the night's services only — not accommodation, decor, catering, entertainment, an after-party or the accessory long tail, because nobody publishes prices for those. Transport enters both baskets at R1,000, because that is the only car-hire rate any South African supplier publishes — and it is an entry-level price for a small car, not a premium one. No company publishes a premium rate for us to put here, so the high basket carries an entry-level figure in that one row.
The gap between those two numbers is the whole story of this page. It is the same dance, the same photos and the same memory at either end. What changes is how much of it was bought.
One school, one venue, three years
Ticket prices are set school by school, so a national figure would be meaningless. What we can show is one school's own prices over three years, published by the school itself.

Corsage, boutonniere or posy
Small money next to the outfit, and usually the last thing anyone remembers to order. Most florists sell the corsage and boutonniere as a matching pair, which is generally cheaper than ordering them separately and removes the risk of the two clashing. How families actually bring the number down
Dress drives and donation projects
These are real, and the place to start is the school — teachers usually know which local drive is running. forgood.co.za is the best place to search for a current one; it carries dated campaigns and is where the NPO The Beauty I Own lists a matric dance dress drive. In 2026, Mrs South Africa first princess Talitha Oosthuizen ran a Gauteng drive aiming to dress a thousand matrics who could not otherwise attend, with fitting days over Youth Day and Women's Day. Drives open and close on their own schedules, so check whether one is currently collecting rather than assuming.
Second-hand and pre-loved
A matric dress is worn for one evening. Resale rails and local community groups fill up with last year's gowns from about July, and a good tailor can take in a bargain dress for a fraction of what the difference in price was.
Hire rather than buy
On our own figures the gap between the bottom of the hire range and the bottom of the buy-new range is the single largest saving available on the whole night.

The biggest saving that costs you nothing in the photos.
Share the transport
Four matrics splitting one hired car is the same arrival for a quarter of the money, and it is a better story afterwards.
Skip the paid photographer
The pre-dance photos at home, taken by whichever relative has the steadiest hands, are the ones that end up framed. The professional ones tend to end up in a folder.
None of this is a consolation prize. Plenty of the best matric dance photos in this country were taken on a driveway in Mitchells Plain with a donated dress and a borrowed car, and you cannot tell from looking.

How much do people spend on matric dance?
There is no survey of South African matric dance spending, so nobody can honestly quote you an average. What we can show is what the individual pieces cost. Adding up the cheapest published prices we found comes to R4,543; adding up the most expensive comes to R18,722. Neither is a typical bill — they are the two ends of what is actually on sale, and both cover the night's services only.
How much does a matric dance dress cost?
On the prices we gathered on 30 August 2026: hiring runs R649 to R6,000, buying pre-loved runs R2,300 to R3,199, and buying new off the rail at a national chain runs R3,800 to R6,800. Alterations are charged separately, at R165 to R310 on the one national price list we found.
What is the typical budget for matric dance?
We have deliberately not published one. For most line items we found between one and three suppliers publishing a price — enough to show you the spread honestly, nowhere near enough to average into a national going rate. Published prices vary several-fold on almost every item, so a single "typical" figure would hide the one thing that actually matters. The low and high columns in the table above are the honest answer.
Is prom the same as matric dance?
As an occasion, near enough. The matric dance is South Africa's equivalent of the American prom: a formal school dance for the final-year group, with the same dressing up and the same photographs on the driveway beforehand. The differences are worth knowing. The name is different, and in Afrikaans it is the matriekafskeid. The timing is different, since most South African dances fall between August and October rather than in the northern spring. And the customs are genuinely not transplanted: the etiquette you will read on American prom sites, including who is supposed to buy whom flowers, is not a South African rule and does not settle anything here. If you are looking for the local convention on that, there isn't a single one.
What happens at a matric farewell?
The shape is fairly consistent even though the scale is not. There is an arrival, which at many schools has become the main event in itself, followed by photographs. Then a sit-down or buffet dinner at a hired venue, usually with a welcome drink and the venue booked for the evening. Somewhere in there come speeches and awards, and some schools crown a king and queen. After that it is dancing until the venue's hours run out. Anything after that is an after-party, which is privately arranged rather than run by the school, and plenty of learners skip it entirely.
What is matric dance in South Africa?
Matric is the final year of South African high school, Grade 12, and the matric dance is the formal evening a school puts on for that year group. Afrikaans schools generally call it the matriekafskeid, and "matric farewell" and "matric dance" are the same event under different names. It works as a rite of passage more than a party: for most learners it is the last thing the whole grade does together before the final exams and the end of school. Most schools hold theirs in the third term, roughly August to October, though some run much earlier in the year.
