Christmas Gift Exchange Ideas: White Elephant Rules & Gifts 2026

·7 min read

An office gift exchange is the one December tradition where the gift matters less than the game. Done well, it's the most fun half-hour of the year-end function. Done badly, it's a table of novelty socks nobody wanted. This guide covers how a white elephant gift exchange works, how it differs from Secret Santa, a few other gift exchange games worth trying, and white elephant gift ideas that people will actually want to steal.

What is a white elephant gift exchange?

A white elephant gift exchange is a party game where everyone brings one wrapped gift, and the fun comes from opening and "stealing" gifts from each other. You'll also hear it called a Yankee swap or Dirty Santa. The basic rules are simple:

  • Everyone brings one wrapped gift to a pile, within an agreed spending limit.
  • Everyone draws a number to set the order of play.
  • The first person unwraps a gift from the pile.
  • Each person after that can either unwrap a new gift or steal a gift someone has already opened.
  • Anyone whose gift is stolen can steal another opened gift or unwrap a new one.

The game ends when every gift has been opened. Some groups let the first player swap at the end, since they had no chance to steal. Agree a steal limit before you start, so one popular gift doesn't change hands all afternoon.

Why is it called a white elephant?

The name is said to come from the story of the King of Siam (now Thailand) giving rare white elephants to courtiers who had displeased him. A sacred white elephant could not be put to work, and the cost of keeping one could ruin the owner. The phrase came to mean a possession that costs more trouble than it's worth, which is why classic white elephant parties lean towards funny, slightly useless gifts. If your group would rather go home with something useful, bring gifts people actually want, and the stealing gets far more competitive.

White elephant vs Secret Santa

The two get mixed up, but they are different games. In Secret Santa, everyone draws a name and buys a gift for that one person, so the gift can be personal. In a white elephant exchange, nobody knows who will end up with their gift, so it has to appeal to anyone in the room. If your office is running a name draw rather than a swap, our Secret Santa gift ideas are the better place to start.

That difference changes what you should buy. A gift with a name printed on it is a lovely Secret Santa gift and a poor white elephant one. If you like the idea of personalised Christmas gifts for a swap, choose a general festive message rather than a person's name.

White elephant gift ideas people will fight over

The best white elephant gifts are things almost anyone would enjoy: food, drink and a little indulgence. Snack boxes and chocolate are the safest bets because they suit nearly everyone in an office, and a gift with obvious appeal is the one worth stealing, which is the whole point of the game.

Other gift exchange games for the office

If white elephant isn't quite right for your team, there are other ways to run a gift exchange:

  • Secret Santa: names in a hat, one gift each, and the reveal at the year-end function.
  • Left-right story game: everyone sits in a circle holding a wrapped gift, and someone reads a short story. Every time the story says "left" or "right", the gifts pass in that direction. Whatever you're holding at the end is yours.
  • Themed swap: everyone brings a gift in one theme, such as "proudly South African", "something edible" or "something for the braai". It narrows the shopping and makes the pile look great.
  • Dice game: players take turns rolling dice, and set numbers let you take, swap or pass a gift until a timer runs out.

For a whole team, a themed edible swap is often the easiest sell: nobody worries about taste, and everything gets shared. Our Christmas chocolate gifts fit almost any theme.

How to run a gift exchange that works

A little planning saves a lot of awkwardness on the day:

  • Set one spending limit and make it clear, so nobody feels outdone or out of pocket.
  • Decide gag gifts or good gifts up front. Mixing the two leaves someone holding a joke while everyone else has chocolate.
  • Keep it work-appropriate. If in doubt, leave it out.
  • Wrap to disguise. A box inside a bigger box keeps the guessing going.
  • Allow for delivery. Same-day delivery is available on selected gifts ordered before 4pm in the main centres, but check the cut-off at checkout and have gifts delivered to the office a few days before the party.

FAQs

  • What are the rules to playing the white elephant game? Everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. In turn, each player either unwraps a new gift from the pile or steals one that has already been opened. Anyone whose gift is stolen picks again, and the game ends when every gift is open.
  • Why is it called a white elephant? The name is said to come from the story of the King of Siam giving rare white elephants to courtiers he was displeased with, because the animals were costly to keep. A "white elephant" came to mean a burdensome possession.
  • What is a perfect white elephant gift? One that almost anyone in the room would be happy to take home, such as a biltong or snack box, festive chocolate or a pamper box. Gifts with broad appeal are the ones worth stealing, which is what makes the game fun.
  • Are white elephant and Dirty Santa the same thing? Yes, broadly. White elephant, Dirty Santa and Yankee swap are names for the same style of game, where players unwrap gifts or steal ones already opened. Some people use "Yankee swap" for a version with more practical gifts.
  • What are some good gift exchange gifts? Edible gifts such as chocolate trays and snack boxes, small pamper boxes and festive chocolate hat boxes all work well because they suit most people and are easy to wrap.
