The gift is ordered, the delivery date is set, and then the checkout asks for a card message and your mind goes completely blank. It happens to everyone: the card is the bit they'll read twice, and the bit that's easiest to leave until last. Below are original Christmas card messages written for cards that travel with a gift: short ones for gift tags, warmer ones for family, lighter ones for friends and colleagues, and a few for the people you can't be with this year. Borrow one as it is, or use it as a starting point and add one line of your own.

How to write a Christmas card that goes with a gift
A card that arrives with a gift has a slightly different job from one that arrives on its own. The gift already says "I thought of you", so the card doesn't need to explain the present or apologise for it. Its job is to add the human bit: a line that sounds like you. A simple formula works almost every time:
| Part | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Greeting | Their name, the way you say it | Dear Gogo / Hey Thabo / To the Naidoos |
| 2. One specific line | Something from this year only they would get | Thank you for the lifts to physio in March. |
| 3. The wish | What you hope their Christmas or new year looks like | I hope the holidays are slow and sunny. |
| 4. Sign-off | The name they call you | Love, Sbu (and the dogs) |
Three or four short lines is plenty. If the card is going on a delivered gift you won't hand over yourself, always say who it's from in the message itself, not just on the order: it's the one thing the recipient can't work out on their own. Still choosing the gift itself? Start with our Christmas gift range.
Short Christmas messages for a gift tag
When the space is tiny (a gift tag or a small florist's card), keep it to one line. These all fit. They also work on the little tags on stocking fillers, where there's room for a name and not much else.
- Merry Christmas. Something small to say you matter a lot.
- A little festive cheer, delivered. Love you lots.
- For the person who deserves a quiet moment this December.
- Unwrap slowly, enjoy quickly. Merry Christmas!
- Wrapped with love, sent with a big Christmas hug.
- A treat for you, from the people who love you.
- Here's to sunny days and long lunches. Merry Christmas.
- Saved you the last slice of festive cheer. Merry Christmas!
- Christmas cheer, no assembly required.
- With love and a ridiculous amount of festive spirit.
Some personalised gifts give you a second place to write: a name, or on some a short message, on the gift itself. Check what each of our personalised Christmas gifts lets you add; when there is only room for a name, the card does the talking.
Personalised Seasons Greetings Choc Tray
A tray of chocolates with "Season's Greetings" and a name on the lid: the gift does the greeting, so your card can say something more personal. A good pick for friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Friends get the warmest, least formal messages, and the in-jokes are allowed. Pick one and add a memory from the year.
- Merry Christmas to the friend who answered every 11pm voice note this year. I owe you.
- Twelve more months of being your friend: still the best thing on my calendar. Merry Christmas.
- No matter how far apart the year pulled us, you were always one message away. Love you.
- Here's to more road trips, worse karaoke and better gossip in the new year.
- You heard every rant and every plan this year and never once checked your watch. Thank you.
- You make every braai, every birthday and every bad day better. Merry Christmas!
- May your holidays be full of good food, long naps and zero work emails.
- The only thing better than this gift is knowing I get another year of you. Merry Christmas.
- To my chosen family: thank you for this year. Let's make next year even louder.
- This December, I hope your fridge is full and your phone is quiet. You've earned both.
Christmas card messages for family
Family messages can carry more weight. The best ones thank someone for something specific, rather than for "everything".
- Mom and Dad, thank you for making every Christmas feel like coming home. It still does.
- To my parents: you gave me the best memories of this season. I hope this one is yours.
- Gran, your kitchen is still my favourite place on earth. Merry Christmas, with all my love.
- Oupa, thank you for the stories, the advice and the secret sweets. Happy Christmas.
- To my brother: we've come a long way from fighting over the front seat. Merry Christmas.
- Sis, thank you for being my first friend and my loudest supporter. Love you to bits.
- To the whole family: may this Christmas bring us all around one table again.
- Whatever the year threw at us, we faced it together. Merry Christmas, family.
- To my children: you are the reason the tree goes up every year. Merry Christmas, my loves.
- To the cousins: same chaos, different year. Can't wait to see you all at the table.

Personalised Christmas Photo Coasters
Coasters printed with a family photo and a Christmas greeting put your faces on the coffee table every time someone makes tea. Pair them with one of the family messages above.

In-law messages work best warm but not gushing. Thank them for something real, and include your partner in the sign-off.
- You made room for me at your table and in your family, and I don't take that lightly. Merry Christmas.
- The kindest person I know learnt their kindness from you two. Merry Christmas, and thank you.
- We hope this Christmas gives you a long lunch, a short washing-up list and plenty of us.
- Thank you for the Sunday lunches, the advice and the Tupperware we never return. Merry Christmas!
- We're so lucky to have you in our corner. With love this Christmas, from both of us.
Still choosing the present? Our guide to Christmas gifts for in-laws takes them one at a time.
Christmas card messages for colleagues, clients and the boss
Work messages should be friendly, short and safe to read aloud in the office. Thank them for the year, wish them a proper rest, and leave it there. Drawing names for the office? Most lines below fit on a tag, and our Secret Santa gift ideas take care of the present.
- Thank you for a great year of working together. Wishing you a restful Christmas and a strong start to the new year.
- You made the hard weeks easier this year. Enjoy every minute of the break.
- Thank you for your support and your patience this year. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
- To the best team I could ask for: switch off, eat well and come back rested.
- Working with you was one of the best parts of our year. Here's to the next one.
- Out of office: switched on. Phone: switched off. Merry Christmas.
- Thank you for leading by example this year. Enjoy the holidays.
- Here's to a quiet inbox, a loud family lunch and a fresh start in January.
For a card that rides along with a hamper, pair any of these with something from our Christmas hampers; shareable treats suit an office better than anything personal.
For a client, add one line about something you worked on together this year: that detail is what makes a year-end client gift feel like a thank-you rather than a mailing-list parcel. A card for your child's teacher follows the same rule: name one thing your child enjoyed this year, and it will mean more than any general thank-you.
Personalised Christmas Santa Choc Tray
A red tray of chocolates with a Santa hat, "Merry Christmas" and a name on the lid. It's a tidy way to thank a colleague or client individually without going over the top.

A card for your partner is the one place where sentimental is exactly right. Keep it honest and specific.
- My favourite Christmas tradition is waking up next to you. I love you.
- You are my favourite part of every season, but especially this one.
- Thank you for another year of laughing at the small things and carrying the big ones together.
- All I want for Christmas is more ordinary days with you.
- Here's to us: older, wiser and still arguing about how to load the dishwasher.
- Wherever we spend Christmas, home is wherever you are. Merry Christmas, my love.
Flowers and a card is a classic partner gift for good reason. The Christmas flowers range has festive arrangements that suit a message like these.
Red Rose and White Lily Bouquet
Deep red roses and white lilies are about as Christmas as a bouquet gets without a single bauble. Add one of the partner messages above and the card does the rest.

For the friend, sibling or colleague who would be suspicious of anything sincere. Use with care for grandparents.
- I was going to make you a gift, then I remembered I've met my crafting skills.
- Merry Christmas! This gift contains no calories. (This is a lie.)
- I asked Santa to bring you everything on your list. He laughed and sent this instead.
- The elves reviewed your year. The verdict: "nice-ish". Merry Christmas!
- Plan for Christmas Day: eat, nap, repeat, then complain about the heat.
- This gift was chosen with love, care and a moderate amount of panic.
- Congratulations on surviving another year of family group chats.
- Merry Christmas from the person who still owes you a Tupperware.
Religious Christmas card messages
For a card that speaks to faith, keep the language gentle and personal.
- May the peace that arrived in a manger that first Christmas find its way into your home this year.
- Wishing you a blessed Christmas and a new year held in God's grace.
- Praying that this season brings you rest, hope and the quiet joy of knowing you are loved.
- May the hope of that first Christmas carry you gently into the new year.
- As we remember the birth of Jesus, we give thanks for you and your family. Every blessing this Christmas.
Messages for when you can't be there
If you won't be at the table this year, the card has to stand in for you. Say so plainly.
- Wish I could be at your table this year. Save me a seat (and a plate) next Christmas.
- Miles apart, but you're in every one of my Christmas plans. Phone me when this arrives.
- Consider this a stand-in for the hug I owe you. Collecting in person next year.
- It won't feel like Christmas without you, so I've sent a little piece of it your way.
- Different time zones, same family. Merry Christmas from all of us over here.
Personalised Post Card Snack Tin
A tin with a postcard-style lid that you personalise, filled with snacks: it is a card and a gift in one. Made for the family member who is a long way from home this Christmas.
View on Hamperlicious →How to sign off a Christmas card
The sign-off is where the card stops being a template and becomes yours. A few that suit different relationships:
- Close family: All my love / Love always / Hugs from all of us
- Friends: Big love / Cheers to next year / Your partner in crime
- Work: Warm wishes / With thanks / Best wishes for the season
- Faith: Blessings / Every blessing this Christmas
- Afrikaans-speaking family: Baie liefde (lots of love), after a "Geseënde Kersfees" greeting
And always sign with the name they call you. A card from "Mrs N. Mokoena" reads like a company Christmas card; one from "Nomsa" reads like a hug. For gift ideas to send with your card, our Christmas gift guide covers everyone on the list.
FAQs
- What is the best Christmas message? The best Christmas message is short, specific and sounds like you. Name one thing from this year that only they would recognise, add a warm wish for the holidays, and sign with the name they call you.
- What should I write in a basic Christmas card? Use four parts: their name, one specific line, a wish for the season and your sign-off. "Dear Sam, thank you for a year of great walks. Have a restful Christmas. Love, Jo" is all a basic card needs.
- What's a good short gift message? Keep it to one line, such as "Something small to say you matter a lot" or "A little festive cheer, delivered". Always make clear who the gift is from when it is being delivered.
- How can I say Merry Christmas in a unique way? Skip the phrase and say what you actually wish for them, such as "I hope your holidays are slow, sunny and full of good food". For Afrikaans-speaking family, write it in their language: "Geseënde Kersfees".
- How do you wish someone a happy Christmas in a card? Address them by name, thank them for something specific from the year, wish them a restful season and sign off personally. A specific thank-you makes a simple wish feel personal.
